Color Belt Traditional Poomsae

Color belt poomsae competitors will perform one poomsae according to rank:
White-Yellow (10, 9, 8 Kub) : Basic Form 1, Taegeuk 1-2
Orange-Green-Purple (7, 6, 5 Kub) : Taegeuk 2-4
Blue-Brown (4, 3 Kub) : Taegeuk 4-6

Red (2, 1 Kub) : If there are 5 or more red belts in the poomsae division, Taegeuk 7 will be performed in round one. The top 4 will compete in the final round with Taegeuk 8. Groups with 4 or fewer competitors will proceed straight to the final round with Taegeuk 8.

Black Belt Traditional Poomsae

This version of Black Belt Poomsae will be done in the same manner as Color Belt poomsae. Black Belt “Grassroots” Poomsae competitors will perform one poomsae according to rank:
1st Dan/Poom Koryo
2nd Dan/PoomKeumgang
3rd Dan/Poom Taebaek
4th Dan/PoomPyongwon
etc.

Black Belt Sport Poomsae

This version of Black Belt Poomsae will be done in a WTF SPORT POOMSAE FORMAT. Final round will be performed one at a time and scored (NOT Head to Head). Be sure to check for the designated poomsaes below. You must be familiar with the “Sport Poomsae Format” to participate.

Individuals

  • 6-7 years: Taegeuk 6 (SEMI), Koryo & Taegeuk 5 (FINAL)
  • 8-9 years: Taegeuk  7 (SEMI), Koryo & Taegeuk 6 (FINAL)
  • 10-11 years: Koryo (SEMI), Taegeuk 5 & 8 (FINAL)
  • 12-14 years: Taegeuk 6 (SEMI), Keumgang & Koryo (FINAL)
  • 15-17 years: Taegeuk 7 (SEMI), Taebaek & Taegeuk 6 (FINAL)
  • 18-30 years: Taebaek (SEMI), Sipjin & Taegeuk 7 (FINAL)
  • 31-40 years: Taegeuk 8 (SEMI), Keumgang & Pyongwon (FINAL)
  • 41-50 years: Sipjin (SEMI), Jitae & Taegeuk 8 (FINAL)
  • 51+ years: Keumgang (SEMI), Chonkwon & Hansu (FINAL)

Pairs

  • 6-9 years: Taegeuk 8 (SEMI), Taegeuk 6 & 7 (FINAL)
  • 10-11 years: Taegeuk 6 (SEMI), Taegeuk 8 & 5 (FINAL)
  • 12-14 years: Taegeuk 7 (SEMI), Koryo & Keumgang (FINAL)
  • 15-17 years: Taegeuk 5 (SEMI), Keumgang & Taebaek (FINAL)
  • 18-30 years: Taegeuk 7 (SEMI), Taegeuk 6 & Sipjin (FINAL)
  • 31+ years: Taegeuk 8 (SEMI), Sipjin & Jitae (FINAL)

Teams

  • 6-9 years: Taegeuk 6 (SEMI), Taegeuk 7 & Koryo (FINAL)
  • 10-14 years: Taegeuk 7 (SEMI), Keumgang & Taegeuk 8 (FINAL)
  • 15-30 years: Koryo (SEMI), Taegeuk 7 & Keumgang (FINAL)

Color Belt Sparring

The JKI will be using modified USAT rules.  Please watch the video to understand the modifications for the JKI.

Head Kick Rules

  • 11 and younger – NO head contact.
  • 12 and older – LIGHT head contact.

Points

  • Punch – 1 point
  • Body – 2 points
  • Spin to body – 3 points
  • Head – 3 points
  • Spin to head – 3 points (12 years and older ONLY)

Rounds

  • 9 years and younger – 2 rounds, 60 seconds each
  • 10 years and older – 2 rounds, 90 seconds each

Equipment

All color belts will be required to have their own gear including:

  • Reversible chest guard
  • Headgear
  • Mouthpiece
  • Arm, shin, and instep pads
  • Groin cup (males)
  • Appropriate taekwondo uniform

Black Belt Sparring

The JKI will use modified USAT rules. Please watch the video to understand the modifications we will make at the JKI this year.

Head Kick Rules

  • 6-7 black belts – NO head contact.
  • 8-17 & 33+ black belts – LIGHT head contact.
  • 18-32 black belts – FULL head contact.
  • 18-32 black belt exhibition matches – LIGHT head contact.

  • Punch – 1 point
  • Body – 2 points
  • Spin to body – 3 points
  • Head – 3 points
  • Spin to head – 4 points (Senior Black Belts ONLY)

Rounds

  • 9 years and younger – 2 rounds, 60 seconds each
  • 10 years and older – 2 rounds, 90 seconds each
  • Finals (all ages) – 3 rounds, 60 or 90 seconds each (see above)

Weigh-in (ID REQUIRED)

Black belt competitors 8-32 years of age MUST weigh in on Friday night at the Long Beach Marriott. There will be a brief period Saturday morning outside the GOLD entrance to the Pyramid during which competitors may also weigh in if they cannot weigh in Friday.

Competitors who do not make weight on Friday will be placed in their proper weight division without penalty. Competitors who do not make weight on Saturday morning will be DISQUALIFIED with no refund. The JKIOC will attempt to find these competitors an exhibition match, but we cannot guarantee that a match will be found.

Equipment

GEN 1 Daedo E-Foot Socks are REQUIRED. Purchase Daedo Socks here. Daedo PSS will be provided. NO E-headgear will be used.

All black belts will be required to have their own gear including:
